The government has produced guidance to help schools promote
healthier lifestyles among its pupils.
The guidance suggests that schools should develop a food policy
to promote healthier eating. School lunches are a key area that
needs improving, it states, as they provide around a third of
children’s food and nutrient intake and can influence what
children eat.
School dining rooms should be attractive, sufficient time should
be allocated to the lunch period, and pupils should have access to
drinking water at all times.
The government intends to revise secondary school nutritional
standards and provide support to head teachers on how to provide a
meals service.
