Family abandoned Alzheimer’s sufferer

Older people’s campaigners are calling for greater support for
carers after an 82-year-old man suffering from Alzheimer’s disease
was found abandoned at a hospital.

Ken Baker was left at Oldchurch hospital in Romford, east London,
with a letter saying: “Please take care of him – we can’t any
more.” He had been living in Spain with his wife.

His family have now come forward, claiming they only “acted out of
desperation”.

The Princess Royal Trust for Carers said many of the UK’s six
million carers were unaware of their entitlement to an assessment
of their needs by social services.
