Former education secretary Estelle Morris has been appointed as
chair of the Children’s Workforce Development Council.
Morris will take up the role next week, combining it with her
work as pro vice chancellor of the University of Sunderland. She
stood down as an MP at the general election earlier this month.
As head of the council, she will be responsible for developing a
joined-up professional framework for early years’ staff,
increasing the number of social workers working with children, and
improving support to foster families.
Commenting on her appointment, National Children’s Bureau
chief executive and interim chair of the development council Paul
Ennals said: “Estelle Morris is well known and well respected
both for her personal integrity and for her commitment to the
interests of children and young people.”
Jane Haywood, who is currently head of the Children and Youth
Division at the Department for Education and Skills, has been named
as the council’s chief executive.
