Race hate crimes follow terror blasts

Police are investigating a series of race and faith hate crimes
that have taken place across the country since the London
bombings.

At least one person, a 48-year-old Pakistani man attacked in
Nottingham on Sunday in a racially aggravated incident, is known to
have been killed.

A spokesperson for Nottingham City Police said the force was unable
to comment on whether the attack was a reprisal for the London
blasts.

There have also been arson attacks and criminal damage reported on
mosques in various parts of the country, including Tower Hamlets
and Merton in London, Leeds, Birkenhead and Telford.

A spokesperson for The Muslim Council of Britain, the UK’s
representative Muslim umbrella body, said it had received around
30,000 hate messages by e-mail, crashing its server, but that they
had been sent by a small number of individuals.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said the force was working with
community leaders across the capital to provide increased
visibility and that patrols were being carried out in vulnerable
areas.
