Badly performed immigration lawyers should be named and shamed, delegates were told yesterday at a meeting in London.
Sarah Cutler, policy and research officer at the charity Bail for Immigration Detainees, also said that campaigners and asylum seekers should report bad lawyers to the government.
“We need to turn the tide of people coming to us on the Department for Constitutional Affairs and the Home Office,” she said. “They need to know every time some body is let down by a lawyer.”
A spokesperson from the campaign group Women Against Rape, who also spoke at the meeting on deaths in immigration detention organised by BID, backed the call.
She added that visitors to immigration detention centres should also speak out if they witnessed inadequate conditions.
