I’d like to make a quick comment on the September Advice Centre on starting relationships (0-19, Advice Centre, September 2005).
I don’t feel the advice in the ‘What if I’m gay?’ box, is helpful. It tells teenagers asking themselves this question not to worry because they might not be, then suggests waiting until they are sure before talking to someone.
It would be more helpful to have something which focuses on the positives by encouraging young people to talk to someone they trust about these feelings, and which points out that sexuality is not cut and dried. If you wait until you’re sure you’re gay, you could wait a long time and miss out on a lot of fun!
