Questions from Community Care – Born Identity

Born Identity
by Stephen Whittle

* If you have a transgender client with multiple health and care needs, and you feel that disclosure of the client’s history was essential to develop an appropriate care package, how might you ask for permission to make further disclosure? What if the client refuses disclosure? Do you have any liabilities, and if you do how might you avoid them?

* In a multi-client setting, how might you ensure that other clients are respecting of a client who is visibly transgender? What legal responsibilities do you have to ensure that other clients are not discriminating or harassing of the transgender person?

* How comfortable would you feel arranging personal care for a woman who has a penis, or a man who has a vagina? What training would you think was needed for the personal carer?
