STAR RATING: 5/5
The authors of this book are veterans in championing equality, writes Abiola Ogunsola. In addition to a clear discussion about what racism is, it is also concerned with making recommendations as well as providing tools for evaluating action and “what really works.”
It usefully summarises the language for talking about racism and understanding racism. Interventions are listed around legislation, equality at work, accessing services and what they call “multicultural interventions” that are based on difference.
This book is a comprehensive and useful text to guide action for equality, in various sectors and contexts. The range of successful interventions listed may be disappointing but other useful features include an excellent glossary and a timeline table of relevant legislation. These as well as the evaluations offered make the book a valuable resource.
A reading group based on this book in any institution is likely itself to be a successful intervention.
Abiola Ogunsola is lecturer in education at the University of East London
