Board bids to revise police indicators

Youth Justice Board leaders are joining police chiefs to consider how to include restorative and reparative interventions in police performance targets.

The initiative, outlined in a YJB draft prevention strategy, is intended to help reduce first-time entrants to the youth justice system.

The YJB is concerned that minor offences are making up an increasing proportion of the police’s Offences Brought To Justice target. It says low-level offenders should be referred to youth offending teams.

The YJB is now working with the Association of Chief Police Officers to refocus the target on more serious offences and look at other ways restorative justice and reparations might be rewarded in police targets.
