A mother who killed her three-month-old son after inflicting a series of injuries has been jailed for five years.
Joseph Kompus died after suffering a massive head injury at his home in Walthamstow, London, in September 2007.
His mother, Maria Kompusova, 22, was sentenced yesterday after being convicted of the baby’s manslaughter last month. A post-mortem revealed Joseph had also suffered a fractured arm and rib.
Extra training ordered
A serious case review by Waltham Forest Local Safeguarding Children Board found the quality of assessments by health professionals had been “very variable”, and opportunities to identify that the family had additional needs had been missed.
As a result, the LSCB has appointed a team of trainers to advise health and social care workers in Waltham Forest on using the common assessment framework. The framework is a standardised approach to assessments designed to promote early identification of children’s needs.
