At our penultimate stop we find out about Red Cross Cottages, built by the philanthropist Octavia Hill.
The social reformer, born in 1838, was a woman ahead of her time. She was an early champion of affordable housing and seen by some as a pioneer of modern social work as she sought to transform the lives of the inner-city poor by helping them to help themselves.
Red Cross Cottages are now owned and managed by Octavia Housing, the housing association that continues Hill’s vision to provide affordable housing in the heart of London.
