‘Social work in the Arctic? What were you doing, counselling penguins?’ Reactions to The Apprentice’s first social worker

Steven Ugoalah became the first social worker to appear on BBC One’s The Apprentice last night.
Ugoalah had already brought attention to himself in his audition where he claimed to be the best social worker in the world. He said he would find a way to be excellent on Mars and that he was the only social worker to have done social work in the Arctic.

Community Care live tweeted the episode and has brought together some of the reactions to Ugoalah’s performance.

What did you make of Steven? Do you think he represents social work well? [View the story “Reactions to Steven Ugoalah on The Apprentice” on Storify]

I have received this email from the Arctic only this morning so I thought that it would help to share it:

    From: Priscilla Penguin.

Whilst we don’t get the opportunity to taste your wonderful potatoes we were most certainly the beneficiaries of the very best best social work intervention from your Registered Social Worker Mr Steven Ugoalah – we used to call him ‘Mr Miracle.’

Unfortunately my partner, Mr Percy, used to have somewhat of a ‘wandering eye’ and I became suspicious that his affections were more directed towards our close neighbour Penelope. She would be fragrantly preening herself in a most precocious manner whenever Percy was in sight and on several occasions when he supposedly went on stone-gathering missions (we make our nests of small stones) he returned without anything but suspicious marks on his neck – he always said that he was attacked by other penguins and driven back but I had my doubts!

Mr Steven became involved following a Referral from another neighbour who was fed up with our arguments and Mr Steven was just wonderful. He told Percy what a ‘catch’ I was and that Penelope was known to be somewhat of a ‘flighty’ individual who suffered from, I think the term he used was, ‘paranoid jealousy.’

Anyway after just 6 Counselling Sessions with Mr Steven my partner Percy realised where he was better off and we are now the proud parents of little Petunia (yes, we like names beginning with ‘P’). Whether it was all to do with Mr Steven’s intervention I am not sure – perhaps it was the good hiding he got from another of Penelope’s admirers but, anyway, the problem was solved and as Mr Steven was the only Social Worker in the area I have to say what a comfort he was to me at such a time of personal distress. Do you have any Awards that he can be nominated for?
