‘He always listens and I don’t feel alone’: children’s thoughts about their social workers

As part of an awards ceremony for children's social care, Somerset council asked children what they felt about their social workers

Somerset council recently held an award ceremony to recognise their children’s social care staff.

Children and young people were asked to nominate social workers and leaving care workers who they felt deserved an award.

The council received 60 nominations from children and young people working with the children’s social care department. Here are some quotes from young people about what they feel about their social workers.

I’ve been working with this incredible woman for 3 and a half years. She makes you feel a lot more than a young person on her caseload”

I was interested in reading the feedback regarding the positive views and feelings that many have.I Am a social worker in NI, working with adolescents and their families/carers.My service offers individual and group work to male and female adolescents and we also deliver /undertake community development initiatives with for example young mums, teen girls, marginalised and struggling with a range of issues. I have always enjoyed my work and achieve much job satisfaction. This reached crescendo levels when for Xmas 2014 a young woman whom I had worked with and supported on a number of levels presented me with a “life story book” contained in a huge gift box.Inside nestled in an array of items symbolic of our journey together was a book hand crafted and painstakingly put together ..three years work…..the most fabulous art, stories, memories, pouring her heart out in respect of the role I had played in her life ,the significant of this and her healing and strength in moving forward .I will never in my life time receive such a valuable gift .This story is something that should be read by many and is true evidence that if you can connect with those with whomever you work with it can truly make a significant difference, belief in this young woman gave her hope and hope got her through… Are there any forums where I could share this story as both I and this young woman would be delighted to share it…Imelda Fearon
