Mairs wins appeal against inclusion on Poca List

Former Haringey Council social worker Angella Mairs has won her
appeal against her inclusion on the Protection of Children Act
    list, writes Sally Gillen.

Mairs, a former team manager within the department at the centre
of the Victoria Climbie case, was placed on the Department for
Education and Skills list following her dismissal for professional
    misconduct.

She was criticised for failing to read Victoria’s file at a
supervision meeting with the eight-year-old’s allocated worker,
Lisa Arthurworrey, three months before she died in February
    2000.

The tribunal, which heard Mairs’ case last week, ruled
unanimously that it would allow her appeal and will publish reasons
for its decision in the coming weeks.

In a statement, the Dfes said its lawyers would examine the
judgment to see if there were grounds for appeal but, if that
failed, Mairs’ name would be removed.

Arthurworrey, who was also placed on the list after she was
sacked for professional misconduct, will appeal in March 2005.
