New research from Community Care on voluntary sector

Community Care is running a series of seminars on recruitment and
retention in the voluntary sector. The seminars are based on
research that compares the voluntary sector to other professions
and fields of work.

Some key findings from the research include:

• Social care remains relatively poorly paid compared to
other professions with an average salary of £28,000 in the
voluntary sector. 

• Vacancy rates in London and the South East remain the
highest in the country and pay still stand at only 87 per cent of
the regional average in these areas.

• On average it is six years since respondents last changed
their employer and most the reason for moving is the prospect of a
better job and career progression.

• When asked their reasons for joining their current
employer, three-quarters of the sample said it was for a new job
offering a fresh challenge, while more than a third each mentioned
higher salary and the good reputation of the employer.

• By contrast, approximately a fifth of the sample cited
negative reasons for leaving their last employer, including poor
management support, lack of career development potential and
failure to recognise the job done.
