Sun shortlisted for Baby P campaign award: our response

We discovered yesterday that The Sun had been shortlisted for a Press Gazette journalism award for its Baby P campaign.
We found this very concerning and expect our readers will as well. We sent the following email to Press Gazette:

I've just been reading your coverage of the Press Gazette award shortlist and noticed that The Sun's Baby P coverage had made the list. We at Community Care are concerned at this campaign's inclusion as although we realise it generated a lot of reader interest we feel this came off the back of biased reporting that misled their readers as to the facts and has resulted in what social workers perceive to be a "witch hunt" against them.

Our concerns about the campaign were summarised in an open letter we sent to The Sun and a petition calling for more positive coverage of social work in the paper, which has so far garnered over 3,700 signatures.

If you're interested in covering this issue we would be happy to get back to you with more information.

We've received a response from Press Gazette and it may be that they are interested in covering this issues as a story. As well as organising this awards ceremony, Press Gazette is also the trade magazine for journalists so this award may provide a good opportunity to get some wider awareness among journalists about coverage of social work issues in the media.

We'll update you when we know more but in the meantime we'd love to hear your views.

Meanwhile, our petition calling on The Sun to back social workers has passed 3,700 signatures. If you haven't signed it yet, please do. And if you have signed it, please forward the link to friends and colleagues.

Our campaign has also received a boost in Parliament, with the number of MPs signing an early day motion calling on the media to back social work rising to 49. Please contact your own MP and ask them to sign it.

And we've received support for our campaign from children's charity NCB. Chief executive Paul Ennals was among the first signatories to the petition. He told us: "Social workers play a central role in supporting children and families; they do a very challenging job on behalf of us all, and they deserve our support."

I think it is disgusting the way newspapers such as The Sun have pinpointed social workers as the culprits! I don't think they realise that if social workers were not in society, then there would be much more problems than there are today!
A lot of society has scapegoated social workers because they cannot accept that a mother could have done this against a defenceless child (Baby P).

Well done Community Care, you're definetly caring for the community and doing a wonderful job of it!

I am extremely concerned about the culture of blame targeting social workers. Can anyone please tell me what BASW are doing about this? We social workers are completely out on a limb when it comes to the right support needed by our own "so called" support systems. I really feel that I should not be contributing to BASW anymore as there appears to be no real public support for us.

Social workers have the most difficult and stressful job, when we get it right most of the time this is never reported. Having said all that I thoroughly enjoy my work, yes at time it is stressful but my reward is when I achieve the best outcome for the child and the family. I have worked in frontline social worker which was very difficult due to workload management is very heavy and understand why mistake is made.
