Health minister John Hutton has announced the appointment of
Lynne Berry as chief executive of the General Social Care
Council.

Berry, who is currently chief executive of the Equal
Opportunities Commission, will take up her post with the GSCC in
September.

She qualified as a social worker and has worked in both the
statutory and voluntary field. She was chief executive of the
Family Welfare Association from 1991 to 1996, and executive
director of the Charity Commission from 1996 to 1999 before joining
the Equal Opportunities Commission.

Berry chaired the Joseph Rowntree Foundation’s commission on
standards and codes of practice in the voluntary sector, which
reported in 1997.

The chairperson and members of the council, which is due to
begin work in October, are yet to be announced.
