Recruit abroad, say readers

Three quarters of visitors to Community Care’s website believe
social services departments should recruit from other countries,
such as South Africa.

The finding that 72 per cent of people believe it is acceptable
to recruit from countries with serious problems of their own, comes
after South Africa’s minister for social development, Dr Zola
Skweyiya, accused Britain of “robbing” his country’s social workers
(see News, 31 May, page 8).

This week’s question asks: Are you concerned that the Laming
inquiry panel investigating the death of Victoria Climbie is not
independent enough?

Louis Blom-Cooper QC, who chaired inquiries into the deaths of
Kimberley Carlile and Jasmine Beckford in the 1980s, said he did
not believe the team assembled by Lord Laming was independent or
impartial enough.
