New research from the Department for Education
and Skills has highlighted that as many as one in five adults may
not have been able to calculate their winnings or compare odds
correctly for last weekend’s Grand National.
The
survey was carried out as part of the government’s Get On campaign.
The campaign argues that improving ability in maths can boost
earnings over the course of a working life by up to
£50,000.
Adult
skills minister John Healey said he was keen to see more people
taking advantage of the thousands of free courses available across
the country.
The
Get On campaign aims to encourage people with numeracy and literacy
problems to sign up for training that can help them, and to raise
awareness of adult basic skills issues. It aims to help 750,000
adults over the next three years.
