NSPCC parenting adviser Eileen Hayes aims to give professionals the confidence to tackle difficult questions about physical punishment, through the use of case studies and clear explanations and facts about attitudes and discipline. This will give professionals a basic grounding in giving positive discipline advice to parents, writes Caroline Morris.

Issues such as why physical discipline does not work, attitudes to physical punishment that professionals are likely to encounter, what is positive discipline and case studies of approaches are explored and discussed.

More common questions parents might ask are also addressed, such as ‘Won’t children be spoilt if you don’t smack them?’ and ‘It never did me any harm so it’s good enough for my children, isn’t it?’ An informative resource which, at £1.50, is a bargain.

Caroline Morris is a regional training and development manager.
