Jail term for fake social worker

A bogus social worker who tricked pensioners in to handing over
cash has been jailed for 11 years.

Neil Edgar, 47, of Ilkeston, admitted burglary and obtaining
money by deception when he appeared before Nottingham Crown
Court.

The court heard that Edgar had used a fake identity card to
persuade more than 15 pensioners in the Nottingham and Derby area
that their benefits had been overpaid and that they must pay back
the money in cash.

Edgar was caught through an initiative run by Derbyshire and
Nottinghamshire police called Operation Liberate aimed at combating
bogus callers.

Sentencing Edgar, Judge Dudley Bennett said: “You are an
absolute disgrace.”
